research, academic writing, queer identity, create understanding

The goal of my thesis was to gain insight into how animated films can be used to help children between the age of 6 and 9 be understanding of different queer identities.

Abstract

This thesis covers a collection of sources discussing gender and sexuality in film, societal relevance in diverse representation of gender and case studies on kid’s media with representation of the queer community. The overarching research goal was to gain insight into how animated films can be used to help children between the age of 6 and 9 be understanding of different queer identities. By using five subquestions in topics on grabbing and sustaining attention, patterns between age and queerness, design elements and triggering and initiating conversation, a lot of knowledge has been gained on this topic. This has resulted in a practical implementation of the knowledge in the preproduction of the graduation film De Emping Bende. The most relevant insights are including a diverse set of (opposing) characters, using themes that are relevant in the development of identity in children and sustaining the attention of children throughout the film.
